The project

ZigBeeOnTrack aims to develop an integrated system for introducing the ZigBee technology into railway sector applications.
ZigBee is a specification for a suite of high level communication protocols using small, low-power digital radios based on the IEEE 802.15.4-2003 standard. This wireless technology reduces time and addition burdens related to installation and operation. Moreover, the upkeep of this technology, both periodical and preventative, is easier than that of existing technology.
During the implementation of ZigBeeOnTrack two railway devices will be provided with this new wireless technology; in particular this two devices are:
  • The REC CABINET BOARD – it is the most widespread equipment produced by IRMIE Impianti, and is widely recognised by users as a high quality tool.  For years the REC system has placed IRMIE Impianti as the leading manufacturer in this area. The function of the REC system (Electric Coaches HV supplying) is to provide power to coaches (up to 13) in the absence of a locomotive. IRMIE Impianti produces the REC cabinet board in several versions, the most prestigious being the REC1000.
  • The BRAKE TEST SYSTEM – it represents one of IRMIE Impianti’s most esteemed products in the railroad field. It is the ideal solution for controlling operations of vehicle brake systems or entire railroad convoys (passenger coaches and freight trains). As for the REC system, this system provides the possibility to perform an automatic brake test without the presence of the locomotive, which is substituted by the Brake Test System. Another advantage is the possibility to print the results from the test with an on-board report module printer, located in the equipment. Furthermore, it is possible to personalise test tolerance.

During the implementation of this project the following prototypes will be developed:
  • REC cabin with ZigBee technology;
  • TPF turrets to test brake systems in railway convoys;
  • Remote control operator to undertake tests across the convoy;
  • Management unit of TPF compressor room;
  • Management unit of TPF test activities.

After their implementation the prototype will be tested, first in a laboratory, then on site. Tests will be undertaken on the basis of standard company procedures and using special equipment for component testing.
